Alien: Romulus it was full of surprises for the fans of the Alien franchise, so it’s fitting that, months later, it had a big, final twist for everyone. No, nothing with this insanely alien alien hybrid from the end of the movie. We intend a tweak to the visual effects for the home release in one of its most controversial scenes.
In the film, the crew encounters an android named Rook who is aboard the titular ship with allegiance to the evil corporation, Weyland-Yutani. Rook looks exactly like Ash, played by Ian Holm in the original Alienbecause it is the same make and model as Ash. Holm died in 2020 however, so with the permission of his widow, the director Fede Alvarez and his team recreated the likeness of Holm with a combination of practical effects, visual effects, and acting on-set. YYou can read about the specifications hereand also because people were a little upset about it.
It turns out, however, when Romulus hit theaters last summer, Alvarez wasn’t very happy with how the effect looked. “We just ran out of time in post-production to get it right,” he told Empire Magazine. “I wasn’t 100 percent happy with some of the shots, where you could feel a little more CG intervention. So, for people who react negatively, I don’t blame them.”
Knowing that, Alvarez and the team returned to the shots for the home release and improved it. He confirmed the action on X (noted by Screencrush) and then explain more about the Empire. “We fixed it,” he said. “We have done better for the release now. I have convinced the studio that we need to spend the money and make sure to give the companies that participated in making the proper time to finish and do well. It is much better.”
There is no video comparing the two (yet), but according to Alvarez, the new effect on the home release was achieved by leaning more on the physical side of the creation instead of the digital, which was the opposite of the theatrical release. . “(Animatronic puppeteer) Shane Mahan actually made this Ian Holm animatronic based on a head cast from The Lord of the Ringsand this was the only one that existed,” said Alvarez. “What we did (for the release at home) was to return much more to the puppet. It’s much better.”
Alien: Romulus was available at home (including VHS!) for a few weeks. Have you noticed a change?
