Matthew McConaughey. Ledger Heather. Tom Hanks. Hugh grant. You would be a pressure to find a listing actor A in the ’80s,’ 90s or early aughts that did not dip his foot in the ROM-Com pool. Movies like You have mail, Notting Hill and How to lose a guy in 10 days Dominated the film’s landscape, collecting the success of a box office, critical acclaim and guaranteed “boy” status for anyone who plays the complex knight and/or misunderstanding in bright armor.
But great drought came to the 2010s for the genre. Raudme-no strings were attached to a bad teacher, for example-replacing romance seriously, the stories of love that was once celebrated became a precedent for a parody and only the whisper of the term “rom-com” had the most serious actors running for the hills.
There were, of course, a few hits separated, like Emma Stone’s 2010 female-on Easy andor 2011 Crazy, stupid, love (Includes Ryan Gosling’s Abs crazy, silly). But mostly, the landscape was dotted with low budget efforts that were in DOA.
It wasn’t until 2018 that a new romantic hero came to light. Glen Powell Deficiency of the Ods with innovative performance in the criminally underachieved Netflix ROM-Com Was established contrasting Zoey Deutch. Five years later, he remained loyal to his roots with Juggernaut Box Office 2023 anyone but you. The movie, loosely based on Much ado for nosurpass Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 Romeo + juliet Like the most gross shakespeare adaptation of all time (take that, Leo!). That same year Powell had Man hitwho won – despite his lack of theatrical run across the country – Golden Globe’s choice nominations and critics to him. Two months later, he introduced another sweeping romance with Twisters.
In terms of the secret ROM-COM success, the actor has said that two things are necessary: fun and chemistry. Powell, of course, is one of those joints that seem to create fireworks with all his leading women – Sydney Sweeney, Adria arjona and Daisy Edgar-JonesTo name but a few-but it also understands the effect that well-implemented romantic comedy can have on pop culture in general. Now other actors follow the same, die once again to sink their teeth to these once found roles.
When Renée Zellweger returned as Bridget Jones in last year Crazy about the boy. EJIOFOR CIWETHER and Leo Woodall -The most actors call today-played her interests. This summer, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans fight Dakota Johnson ‘s heart in Celine’s song Latest initiative, materialists, centered on a complex love triangle that has spilled endless conversations at -lein.
Junior stars also want in on the romantic act. Tom Blyth He said he “active looking and reading many ROM-com scripts” a few months before being cast as the front in the adaptation of Emily Henry’s book seller People we meet on vacation. And Dylan O’Brien He admitted he would love to be part of ROM-Com after growing up in an age where studios “give money” in the genre. “And then I watched them also disappear, so to see them start to come back, it’s great,” he said while teasing the possibility of staring in another of Henry’s upcoming films.
So who do we thank for the ROM-COM revival? Kate Hudson said during the appearance of 2024 on The scene That firing interest is about “investing” in the right story, so Hollywood may be listening. Others (like me) may credit Powell and Gosling for adhering to the genre despite his years of unpopularity, or the increase in book-to-screen adjustments that have a guaranteed built-in audience and ready source material. Life may have become so hard, sweet escape is what we long for these days.
It doesn’t matter why it happens – it’s good news that it happens! Whoever you are, love remains a general experience. It meets us where we are. Whether that’s healing from heartbreak, navigating our first real romance or finding the courage to try again, there’s a ROM-COM for everyone’s story. And that’s something worth being a part of.
