Former Indian national cricket team player Robin Uthappa shared his opinion on whether Rohit Sharma has played the last Test of his career or not. He believes the team captain will get a proper send-off and play the next series for the team as well.
Rohit Sharma has come under massive scanner for his poor run of form in recent times in Test cricket. Since the start of the Test series against the Bangladesh national cricket team at home, the Indian national cricket team skipper has not been able to get all the matches going. Since then, he has only managed to hit a half-century.
Rohit Sharma’s poor form with the bat continued even in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The Indian National Cricket Team skipper could not get going in the three matches he played, and that confidence also reflected in his leadership and he was not up to the task.
Rohit Sharma batted in the middle order for two games, and that move didn’t work, but after that, he returned to the top in the Melbourne Test. However, he still couldn’t get going and eventually accepted the tough call and later decided to drop out of the ongoing fifth Test, which is taking place at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney.
Rohit Sharma spoke to the media on the second day of the ongoing match and said that he retired for the sake of the team. He admitted that he tried all the things but things did not work in his favor and hence he decided to leave the ongoing game and handed over the lead to Jasprit Bumrah.
With Rohit Sharma missing the match, there has been a lot of speculation whether the fast bowler has played his last Test or not. But Robin Uthappa believes it won’t be the skipper’s last match as he is the world cup winning captain. He emphasized that he would get a proper send off. Speaking in a video shared on her Instagram handle, she explained:
“People (have been) contemplating or speculating: ‘Is this going to be his last Test match? Is he not going to play Test cricket again?’ In my opinion, I don’t think there is six months to the next Test series, it will probably be a World Cup winning captain.
Robin Uthappa added that people look at the negative side of everything. He admitted that while the batsman is going through a rough patch, he has been a consistent performer for the team in other formats as well. He elaborated:
“With the intensities and the losses in this tournament, people look at it negatively. Yes, he has had a very lean year in Test cricket, but he has been a consistent player in other formats of the game, and I believe that the legends of the game deserve a decent send off.”
Rohit managed just 31 runs in the ongoing series at an average of around 6 in the series.
