Captain of the Indian cricket team Rohit Sharma has set the record straight on speculation about his retirement from Test cricket following his absence from the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
Rohit’s decision to miss the Sydney Test has been one of the most talked about topics in the cricketing world for the past few days. In an interview with Star Sports during the lunch break on Day 2 of the Test, the Indian star clarified that he is not retiring from the longer format. He emphasized his poor form as the only reason for his absence, denying any notion of an imminent retirement.
“This is not a retirement decision. I am not walking away from this game. But I took a decision to walk away from this game because I could not score runs with the bat.” Rohit said.
Rohit has struggled with the bat in the current series against Australia, managing just 31 runs in five innings, indicating a major dip in his performance. Despite this, he remains optimistic about his future in the format, showing his belief in his potential to bounce back while acknowledging the unpredictable nature of cricket.
“There is no guarantee that I will score runs in 2 months or 5 months. I have seen a lot of cricket, every minute, every second and everyday life changes. I think things will change but at the same time I have also to be realistic”. added Rohit.
The cricketing community, including fans and former players, had been speculating a lot about Rohit’s future, especially after reports suggested talks with BCCI officials and retirement elections. However, these rumors were put to rest when the Nagpur-born cricketer hit out at critics, claiming that he had played the game for a long time and knew what he was doing and that people sitting in the commentary box or analyzing the his game would. not decide their future.
“People sitting in the commentary box, or typing with a laptop in their hands, will not decide how my life goes. I have played the game for so long, they will not decide when I play, how I play, when I captain or when I dismiss. I’m a sensible person, a mature person, a father of 2 children, I have some brains and I know what I want from my life.” the Indian captain added more.
