Former Australian spinner Brad Hogg has made a big statement about Rohit Sharma’s future after his failures in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series. Brad Hogg stated that Rohit Sharma could be nearing the end of his Test career and also questioned the nature of the Indian captain’s dismissals.
The 37-year-old had a poor series in Australia, scoring just 31 runs at an average of 6.20 in five innings. Over his last 15 innings, he has averaged less than 11, with just a half-century. Rohit opted to skip the final Test in Sydney and confirmed in an interview that he wants to continue playing Test cricket.
In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Brad Hogg stated that Rohit Sharma’s Test career is probably over. He criticized Rohit’s dismissals, especially being bowled and LBW as an opener, adding that such dismissals should not happen early in the innings.
“I think Rohit Sharma is probably done right now at Test level. He should have continued. His form over the last 6-7 months hasn’t been great,” Hog.g he said on his YouTube channel.
“It’s just that he’s getting bowled, LBW and as an opener, those kinds of dismissals shouldn’t happen early in the innings. LBW, yes, but it shouldn’t be thrown between bat and pad,” he added.
Team India took a 1-0 lead in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after a dominant win in the first Test in Perth, but a series of defeats in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney saw Australia reclaim the trophy. The Men in Blue lost the series 1-3 and missed out on a place in the World Test Championship (WTC) final.
Rohit’s captaincy has been questioned, with India losing five of their last six Tests under his leadership. Their next red ball challenge will be a five-match series in England starting in June. There were reports of unrest in the Indian dressing room during the tour of Australia, with several players struggling for form.
Brad Hogg said Rohit Sharma’s resignation from his place in the playing eleven for the Sydney Test was a smart decision. However, Hogg felt that Rohit should have made the same move in the fourth Test in Melbourne. Hogg also expressed confidence in Rohit’s abilities in limited-overs cricket.
“It’s a bit disappointing with the form now and I think the red-ball game, he did the right thing in Australia, he probably should have done it in the Melbourne Test and let Gill play in that Test as well,” he said Hogg. in the aforementioned interview.
“When it comes to ODI cricket, I still think he has a lot to offer. He can play a bit more aggressively and with freedom as well. But age is starting to be the wrong side of the ledger for Rohit Sharma. He has had a wonderful run, there’s no doubt about that, I hope for him and for India he does it when he wants to,” he added.
