Robin Wright He will never forget an experience with a “very successful” director who left her tears.
“I’m going to introduce (there was) a man who really doesn’t like women,” said Wright, 59, during the episode Wednesday, September 10, of the Podcast “How to Fail”. “I was very young and shy, and I was traveling by helicopter with this director out to the center of a desert in California – I mean, in the midst of a desert, like, nothing around where the set was – to meet a very famous actor or two, he was directing.”
Wright claimed that she had “guided into the trailer” to meet the star and remembered that she was “nervous as hell” for the face to face.
“Palpitating my heart and I’m just sweating. I didn’t know what to say,” the actress remembered. “I thought a protocol would be what I was familiar with, and that’s when you are invited in, you will be presented to this new person.”
He claimed that there was “no intro” and only “dead silence” in the room.
“I started to feel that it was my responsibility to start the meeting. I was a baby,” he continued. “He pushed me and said, ‘Talk.’ I got out of the trailer and ran out into the wilderness, started crying.
He noted that he was over 100 degrees outside when she was crying. The “highly established older actor” who was in the aftermath was “incredibly kind” to Wright and offered her help.
“He came out and saw me squatting what little shade I got from one side of the car, and I squatted down and I was crying, and it was like, ‘You’re going for a heat stroke,’” he remembered. “He walked me into the air conditioned production trailer and said, ‘Can someone get me a driver to the airport?’ And I went out of there.
Wright said, looking back, that the story “does not sound very bad,” but “the power of it was intense.”
Now that she was a director, Wright said she would “never” do something like that. (Wright praised her ex The house of the cards Crew for her inspiration to start directing in the same podcast chapter.)
“What that does when you’re young and you’re very printable is that it makes you trigger shyly,” he continued. Elsewhere in the episode, Wright added, “That’s why it’s so cool to be older and you feel for the young.”
