Hilariously, almost all of the third-party integrations the company launched — DoorDash, Uber, Midjourney, and more — have been pulled, so those features won’t work. (Not that they really worked before.) The scroll wheel is less janky, and the interface improvements are welcome. For example, you can now press and hold the push-to-talk button and scroll up or down to change the volume.
There have been a litany of updates to the R1 over the year, but three stand out: Beta Rabbit, LAM Playground, and Teach Mode.
Beta Rabbit uses enhanced language patterns for a more conversational experience when you ask the R1 something. I did not find all that conversation GPT-4o or Gemini Live. I asked how we know anything about the early years of the universe, and he began to read an excerpt. At one point she mentioned “cosmic microwave background” at which point I interrupted her and asked how it is detected. Then the R1 started a tirade of “The Search for the Cosmic Microwave Background”, “The Search for This” and “The Search for That”. After five of these, he finally started reading an answer about the CMBs.
LAM Playground is an interesting feature accessible on the Rabbit web portal. These “big action models” run in a virtual browser that you can interact with, and are largely intended to demonstrate how Rabbit will be able to perform its tasks on your behalf. (You know, because I couldn’t do this at launch!) Enter a prompt and Rabbit’s bots will execute it. For example, you can ask to find an item and add it to your Amazon cart, even if you have to access Amazon via this virtual browser, which seems like a massive privacy risk.
I asked him to google “best office chair” and then he took me to the retailer’s web page. It took too much time to do this, and he wrote “the best office chair reviews 2023”. (Is R1 in a different timeline?) But it still went to the first result (which is mine). office chair guidethank you very much), and it took me to the product page for Branch’s Ergonomic Chair Promy first advice.
Where LAM Playground lets you see how this all works, Teaching Mode lets you put it into action. It’s still in beta (I told you the R1 is also in beta). After a few tries, I kept getting an error that made the feature unusable. Finally, it worked on a different day. I created a lesson, and then ran the steps in a virtual browser – the R1 records every click. So when I told my R1 device to do the action, it would mimic my actions.
