Members of Congress from California on Saturday inspected the ruins of Altadena and north Pasadena caused by the Eaton fire, which is still raging.
Representative Judy Chu, whose congressional district includes the communities most affected by the Eaton fire Los Angeles district, took members of Congress from California on a tour of the devastated neighborhoods and streets.
The Eaton Fire has grown to more than 14,100 acres and is 15% contained, Cal Fire said Saturday evening. About 7,000 buildings burned down.

“I was very grateful to my colleagues Congressman from California who were able to drop everything and demonstrate to Los Angeles County and the nation that we Californians support each other,” Chu wrote in a statement released after the tour.

“Pasadena officials told my colleagues how difficult the recovery process would be and that massive support from the federal government would be needed to succeed,” Chu wrote. “They also highlighted how many black families who found refuge from segregation and redlining in Altadena and parts of Pasadena lost all the generational wealth they had successfully built. My colleagues then witnessed how streets, neighborhoods and public institutions were completely razed to the ground.”

Damage assessment and economic loss increased to $135 billion on Thursday, according to AccuWeather, a private company that provides data on weather and its effects.
Chu said she looks forward to working with her colleagues to secure the disaster relief funding needed for recovery and reconstruction.

She added that she would push for legislation “to prevent similar disasters from happening again.”

“Partnerships at all levels of government are absolutely necessary to successfully respond to natural disasters and provide immediate and long-term relief to those who have lost loved ones or returned to their homes or businesses to find nothing,” Chu wrote. “Victims of the wildfires in Southern California will count on Congress to pass — on a bipartisan basis — emergency appropriations to support the continued recovery… We have a long way to go, but like every other part of America, Californians deserve help in case of natural disasters, which will give us the opportunity to recover.”
