The pair started dating in 2011 but never confirmed exactly when they met or when their love story began.
Plaza and the The Horse’s Daughter director has collaborated on films including Life after Beth a Joshy in 2016 and Spin Me Round in 2022.
“I think when you’re with someone who’s in your field, they understand what you’re dealing with on a deeper level,” Plaza said. People in 2019.
Baena also expressed how lucky he is to work with his wife. “She’s amazing. I would work with her if she wasn’t my wife, but luckily she is my wife,” said Baena Speaker Reel in 2022. “The opportunity to do something creative (together) where we are both fulfilled – how rare is that?”
Before starting production on Spin Me RoundPlaza shared a celebratory Instagram post for Baena, praising her film. She too subtle disclosure that the two have tied the knot.
“So proud of my dear husband,” Plaza wrote in May 2021. “How about dreaming of another movie that takes us to Italy to cause more trouble.”

Plaza and Baena have been linked since 2011, but it is unknown when the two actually started dating.

Plaza made his debut as a film producer alongside Baena on The Small Hourswhere she played a nun called Sister Fernanda.

George Pimentel/Getty Images for Sundance Film FestivalPlaza’s dark humor inspired a unique Valentine’s Day Instagram post featuring her husband. Both were asking for a picture, but Plaza held a dagger up to Baena’s face. “And a happy Valentine’s day,” she captioned the photo, adding a heart emoji.
In celebration of the film Baena Spin Me Round in May, Plaza subtly announced that she and Baena had tied the knot. “So proud of my dear husband,” she wrote via Instagram.
He later shared the full story on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in December of that year.
“We got a little bored one night,” said the Parks and Recreation alum remember “We got married and I’ll tell you how: Onehourmarriage.com. That’s right, look up.”
Plaza continued to explain how she had to negotiate in order to get the officer to agree to drive to her home and perform the ceremony in their backyard. She involved her neighbor – who described her as a real witch – to get her spiritual blessing.
“I created a very quick love altar in our yard. The facts of our love, small stones, smoke, fire. Things of that nature. Then the man from Alhambra appeared,” Plaza continued. “I can’t remember much of it, it was a blur. But I’m pretty sure it’s legit.”

Several months later, Plaza opened up to GQ about her marriage to Baena, comparing her life to which is her character forward The White LotusA harpist.
“I’ve been with my husband for 12 years,” she said in November. “I’m all about being in a relationship that has peaks and valleys, and going through a rough patch and comparing yourself to another couple that seems perfect.”
News broke that Baena died aged 47. The cause of death was not immediately released and Plaza did not release a statement.
