Veteran off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, has sought clarity in Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on his role in the squad for the IPL 2026 season. According to a report by EspncricInfo, the Tot Runder has informed the franchise that he is open to continue if he no longer adjusted to his future plans.
Chennai Super Kings acquired Ashwin for 9.75 Rs Corps in the Mega Auction last year. Ashwin returned to his hometown team after eight years. He played nine of the 14 games and took only seven doctors at an economic rate of 9.12.
It is worth mentioning that this was its most expensive season, overcoming its best of 8.49. This was also his first season since his debut in 2009, where he played less than 12 games.

The timeline to release players ahead of the IPL 2026 depends on the auction date, which is yet to be completed. While the mega auction occurs every three years, a mini auction will be held between November and February.
Player shops can pass up to a week before auction. Ashwin, meanwhile, has called for Chennai Super Kings clarity about his role in the 2026 season and is ready to leave the team if he no longer fits his plans.
“R ashwin has asked his team clarity on how they intend to use it at IPL 2026, he has learned espngricinfo. According to sources, he told the franchise that he does not mind separating with them if he does not fit his plans,” the report said.
Ravichandran Ashwin’s departure from Chennai Super Kings came after reports that Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson requested a trade or release ahead of the 2026 IPL auction.
Ashwin began his IPL race with CSK, enjoying great success by winning consecutive titles in 2010 and 2011 under the leadership of Ms. Dhoni. He was also part of the teams that ended up as runners -up in 2012, 2013 and 2015.
Ashwin played the Increased Supergiant Poe (RPSG) in 2016, but lost the 2017 season due to an injury. He then represented Punjab Kings (PBKs) for two seasons before being part of Delhi Capitals (DC) by 2020 and 2021. Ashwin played Rajasthan Royals between 2022 and 2024 before returning to CSK in 2025.
Ravichandran Ashwin is the fifth highest in IPL history. He has taken 187 doctors from 221 games to an average of 30.22 and a 7.2 economy rate, with better figures of 4/34. Ashwin is not only a skilled bowl, but also contributed valuable evidence, accumulating 833 in the league.
CSK has invested Ashwin a lot to help conclude his career, while also nourishing talent through team academy. As the franchise goes through a transitional phase, Ashwin’s experience and strong connection with CSK culture make him a key figure in the workforce.
