Marcus Rashford scored his first goals from Barcelona, as LaLiga giants sank a animated Newcastle side in an exciting game in St James Park on Thursday.
Anthony Gordon returned to the 90th minute for Eddie Howe, who sometimes overcome his great adversaries. But they finally got rid of two Rashford efforts in the second half.
Faced with what was the return of the Magpies to the Champions League after a season, Howe had said that the tie had a “magical” sensation.
And, for Newcastle fans, the contest will have conjured memories of the worship hero Faustino Asprilla, who sinks with a hat-trick against Catalan giants 28 years ago.
However, despite the late struggle, there must be no such heroic kinds of heroics, and it was the Barcelona that this time left the memories happy and, crucially, all three points.
In an intriguing but ultimately, the first half, it was the hosts who enjoyed the best.
Gordon missed a great opportunity within 10 minutes of opening when he could not connect with the lively cut of Antony Elanga.
On such an important occasion, the Magpies showed little sign of nerves, restricting the Catalan club to little clear possibilities.
Dan Burn was perhaps the luck to escape with only one yellow card after a strong challenge to Jules Kounde in the stroke in the middle of the time, but it was Howe’s men who entered the happiest happiest of the two executives.
In the absence of the teenager Lamine Yamal, which was missing from injuries, Hansi Flick had addressed Marcus Rashford, on loan from Manchester United, to make much of the creative offers on his side.
And after a relatively quiet 58 minutes, the England striker won his first goal for LaLiga’s club when he stole a garden by Fabian Schar before the Kounde Cross was brilliantly nodding through Nick Pope.
After ten minutes, Rashford had doubled his account. Howe had talked about magic in construction and, ironically, a moment of brightness would come against his team.
Next to the edge of the Newcastle area, the taken boat shot an unstoppable strike that crashed at the bottom of the crossbar: a sublime effort that suddenly gave visitors to control the contest.
When the clock went in the 90th minute, Gordon gave the hosts a late Life of Life when, after a good Newcastle play, his carefree effort from the Jacob Murphy cross won Joan Garcia on Barça’s goal to turn it into an exciting last minutes.
But there should be no bigger touch in this exciting drama and Barcelona prevailed.
