US President Donald Trump has issued a pardon of the former Virginia sheriff, which was convicted on charges of fraud and bribery.
The jury found former Sheriff Calpeer Scott Jenkins guilty of accepting more than $ 75,000 (£ 55,000) in December last year in exchange for several entrepreneurs in law enforcement.
Jenkins, a longtime supporter of Trump, was sentenced in March to 10 years in prison. On Tuesday, he was supposed to report to prison, but he spent a single day behind bars.
“Sheriff Scott Jenkins, his wife Patricia and their family were dragged through hell,” Trump wrote in his social network.
Trump said Jenkins was “a victim of a surgery of the Ministry of Justice.” The Judge, who managed Jenkins, Robert Balu, was appointed former President Joe Biden, but it was a jury.
Trump called Jenkins a “wonderful man” pursued by “radical left monsters” and “left dead”.
Jenkins was found guilty of one of the conspiracy, four articles of honest services and seven articles on bribery concerning federal programs.
Prosecutors said he had taken a bribe from eight people, including two agents with secret FBI. They were in the form of cash and deposits of the company. Jenkins’ position was chosen.
The men who used Jenkins paid for the auxiliary deputies of the sheriff so that they could avoid road tickets and carry hidden firearms without permission, the prosecutor’s office said.
Despite the fact that the auxiliary deputies of the sheriffs occupy volunteer positions, they may have the powers of law enforcement agencies equivalent to the requirements of paid officers.
Trump said Jenkins tried to offer evidence in his defense, but Judge Balo “refused to allow it, closed it, and then went to the tirad.”
At the time of the sentence, Jenkins said in Virginia that the ex-gray had violated his oath. He said the case proved that the officials who used their positions for “unfair personal enrichment” would be held accountable.
But Jenkins asked Trump for help after his conviction.
“I believe that when he heard the information, I know he would help if he knew my story,” he said in April at a webinar that conducted a constitutional association of sheriffs and peace.
Jenkins was elected Sheriff of the Calpeer County in 2011 and took over in January 2012. It was re -elected in 2015 and 2019.
The former policeman is the last one in the long line of Trump supporters who received a pardon.
In January, the president released almost 1600 sides or switching to the people who are accused of riots of the US Capitol 2021.
The US Constitution claims that the president has “powers to provide representations and sides for crimes against the United States, except for impeachment.”
Pour is a legal forgiveness, finishes further punishment and restores rights, such as the opportunity to vote or run for public office.
