Pope Francis spoke at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican after discharge from the hospital after five weeks of treatment.
The pope briefly appeared on stage in a wheelchair, with a respiratory tube under his nose.
“Hello all,” he said, waving the crowd. “Happy Sunday to all of you, thank you very much.”
The Pope, 88, was discharged from the hospital in Rome on March 23 and appeared in his window and then offered a blessing.
At the time, doctors said he would need at least two months of rest at his residence. On Friday, the Vatican stated that his health was improving, and he was “in a good mood” while continuing his work.
The Pope was admitted to the hospital on February 14 for the infection that led to double pneumonia. One of his doctors said he had two critical episodes during his treatment, where his “life was in danger”.
As of Friday, the Pope improved in breathing, movements and conversations, the Vatican said. Recent blood tests have also shown a slight improvement in its lung infection.
The pope requires less extra oxygen but continues to receive it throughout the day. At night it gets a high flow of oxygen through the nose as needed.
Throughout his life, he suffered a number of health problems, including some of his lungs, deleted at the age of 21, which made it more prone to infections.
