Pope appears on Easter Sunday after a serious illness

Pope Francis appeared on the Easter Sunday blessing on St. Peter Vatican Square, where the celebrations are held.

It was unknown whether the Pontiff, 88, would join the service after discharge from the hospital last month, after five weeks of treatment for infection that led to double pneumonia.

At the time, doctors said he would need at least two months of rest at his residence. Until Sunday, he was seen twice this week.

Tens of thousands of Catholics gathered in Rome for an Easter Mass during this special anniversary year, which has been going on every 25 years and sees millions of pilgrims descending around the city.

In the anniversary year, the Pope began, which usually opened toy holy doors in the Basilica of St. Peter on December 24. Catholics believe that the passage through the door will release them from their sins.

For the first time after the Pope in 2013, he missed most of the great week, including Easter vigilance in St. Peter’s Basilica, where he delegated his duties to the cardinals.

But during a brief appearance inside the basilica on this day he prayed and gave goodies to the children.
