Portuguese and German authorities have started a new search for Madelem Maccan in Portugal, almost two decades after its disappearance.
Madeleine was three years old when she disappeared from a residential complex in PRII before Luza in Algarve during a family vacation on May 3, 2007.
The disappearance of the British toddler caused an investigation into police across Europe and is one of the most popular cases of disappeared in Europe.
On Monday, the Portuguese police confirmed the search, executing German prosecutors between the resort, where Madeleine disappeared and where the German investigator was at that time. The site is reportedly covered by 21 sections of land.
Search – covering the municipality of Lagos, not far from pro -to, in a busy tourist zone, must continue until Friday.
On Tuesday morning Portuguese fire truck and Four vehicles transported by the German police arrived at the search site – located approximately 3.5 miles from the Ocean Club resort, where Madeleine and her family remained.
The roads leading to the playground – which are noticeably and mostly compressed – were closed on Monday, while the focus appears to be abandoned by the coast.
The team cleared the grass and vegetation around the search area, and also looks at the good structures. A large blue tent was also erected in one area.
About 30 German officers are expected to take part in the search.
Charlie Hedge, the former chief of the disappeared children at the National Agency of Crimes, who worked on some of the most popular cases of the UK, said that the investigators were “thrown a little broader” with the last search.
“It seems a little widespread (what) they are looking for something specific,” he said to the BBC. “If it was a solid presenter, you might think it would be determined in one place.”
However, he said that they probably had enough justification to buy warrants.
“They would need to get a financing permit from Germany, and this should be quite a significant cost in the amount of resources and work abroad and the rest.”
The case of Madeleine, originally considered by the Portuguese authorities with the help of the capital police.
German investigators have taken advantage since 2020 when they identified national Christian Bruckner as their main suspect.
A 48-year-old guy is currently serving his sentence in Germany for raping a 72-year-old American tourist in Portugal in 2005. He was supposed to be released in September, but it could be pushed away in early 2026, if he did not pay the fine he owed.
The German authorities fear that if Brookner is not presented, he will disappear after his release.
German police suspect him of murder. British police continues to consider the case as an investigation into the missing.
Bruckner repeatedly denied any participation, and no charges related to its disappearance were made against him.
The Portuguese authorities also called Brookner an official suspect or “Argoid”. They said they would convey any evidence confiscated in the last search for the German authorities.
Met police, who said that this week was known about the searches conducted by the German police in Portugal, the Madeleine’s disappearance was continued.
The case, known as the Grange Operation, has been going on since 2011 and costs about 13.3 million pounds today.
Officials do not reveal when they conduct this last search in Portugal on the basis of what new information, and it looks as if they would be the last look in places where the evidence or body could be hidden.
German police have a European warrant that was approved by Portuguese prosecutor’s office to allow them to searches on private land.
The last search took place two years ago and was concentrated around the reservoir, where the last time they saw Madeleine.
Brückner, which spent time in the area from 2000 to 2017, was found to have photos and videos about the reservoir.
Mr -n Hegez said the latest search area could be “the gap they are trying to connect.” He suggested that the coming liberation of Brookner was “probably moving things” and the police need to “nail” further evidence.
On the night of Madeleine disappeared, her parents were at dinner with friends at the restaurant a few minutes walking while their three -year -old daughter and her younger siblings slept in the apartment on the ground.
Her mother, Kate, found that she was missing at about 22:00.
In 2022, a German documentary found evidence that Bruckner sometimes worked at the Ocean Club as a master, while German prosecutors also linked their data on mobile phones and selling cars with their business against it.
Last month, Madeleine’s parents celebrated the 18th anniversary of her disappearance, saying that “the determination would not leave the stone are not broken.”
