Police are investigating the explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Police said the cyber truck stopped in front of the hotel Wednesday near the glass entrance, after which the vehicle began to emit smoke and explode.
The driver was killed and seven people were injured, police said, without naming any of those involved. Officials said all injuries were minor.
The fire broke out around 8:40 a.m. Pacific Time (3:40 p.m. GMT), just hours after ten people were killed when a man drove a truck into a crowd in New Orleans, Louisiana, on New Year’s Day.
Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Police Department said officials were “well aware of what happened in New Orleans,” referring to the terrorist attack that included improvised explosive devices found near the scene in Louisiana.
“As you can imagine, with the explosion here on the iconic Las Vegas Strip, we are taking every precaution necessary to keep our community safe,” he said during a press conference.
Mr McMahill said there was no longer a threat to the Las Vegas community.
Representatives of the fire service reported that rescuers quickly extinguished the fire.
They added that the public should stay away from the area and that the hotel had been evacuated and most guests had moved elsewhere.
In a statement posted on X, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that “the entire senior team at Tesla is currently investigating this matter. We will release more information as soon as we know anything. We have never seen anything like this.”
The hotel is partially owned by President-elect Donald Trump’s company. In a message on X, Trump’s son, Eric Trump, said there was “reportedly an electric vehicle fire at the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas.”
“The safety and well-being of our guests and staff remains our top priority. We extend our sincere thanks to the Las Vegas Fire Department and local law enforcement for their quick response and professionalism,” he said.
Videos of the incident circulating on social media showed the cyber truck in front of the Trump Hotel entrance before bursting into flames.
