Three people were killed, and several others were hit by a sewerage shaft that caused a landslide that thwarted a passenger train in southwestern Germany, local authorities say.

Prosecutors said the train crashed between Gridlingen and Manderkingen near Stutgart on Sunday after heavy rain in the area.

It is believed that the flow caused overflow, causing a landslide on the shore that follows near the traces.

The train driver, another train officer and one passenger died and 41 were injured. On Sunday, German Chancellor Fraudrich Mertz said he “mourned the victims” and offered “deep compassion” to his families.

In a report on X, he stated that he was close in contact with the Ministers of Internal Affairs and Transport, and asked them to provide emergency services with all the necessary support.

In a statement shared on Sunday, Ulm police said the train passed on the route 90 km (55 miles) between Sigmaringen and Ulm when he left.

They said the investigation of the accident is ongoing and the incident will remain closed.

The railway traffic will remain suspended and the cleaning work will start on Monday, they added.

About 100 people were aboard the train when at least two trolleys broke into the forest area at about 18:10 local time (17:10 BST), the German Agency DPA reports on Sunday.
