Pioli, Ranieri the first favorites to take over the Azzurri

Italy is looking for a new coach after the Sacking of Luciano Spalletti.

Spalletti revealed that his contract had been terminated at a press conference Sunday before the Monday World Cup standings with Moldova.

The decision followed a terrible start to qualify for Azzurri, which was hammer 3-0 by Norway on Friday, leaving them nine shy points from the group’s leaders, who have played two more games.

Spalletti will take over the game with Moldova, but the focus of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) is to find a successor that can help them avoid the humiliation of losing in a third successive world. Prior to 2018, Italy had not stopped classifying since the 1958 tournament.

With the tastes of Carlo Ancelotti (Brazil), Antonio Conte (Napoli) and Massimiliano Allegri (AC Milan) not available, we look at the favorites to take this challenge, as well as some external potential candidates.

The favorites

Stefano Pioli

The experienced ex-experienced ex Milan, Inter Milan and Fiorentina Boss is under contract next to the Saudi League al-Nassr.

However, with the future of Cristiano Ronaldo in Al-Nassr Uncertain after they were lost in the AFC Champions League rating, Pioli probably could be tempted by a home transfer and the possibility of directing his country in a World Cup.

His previous relationship with Captain Gianluigi Donnarumma and key midfielder Sandro Tonali of his time as the winning coach of Scudetto de Milan could help his case as a candidate.

Claudio Ranieri

Ranieri cited the stage in Rome to Gian Piero Gasperini on Friday, ending his career as an interim coach to become the manager and advisor to the club’s property. However, he may now have the opportunity to expand a coaching career who has been doing almost four decades for the first time in the national team.

Raniei’s previous raid on international football was a disaster, as he lasted only four games as a Greece coach in 2014. He failed to win a game and was fired after a loss in the Faroe Islands to classify for the 2016 euro.

However, the 73-year-old actions are high after his spell with Rome, who brought a fifth place in the series at 2024-25, which lost the champion league rating at a point.

Players of their entire career constantly liked Ranieri, it could help to clearly provide the emotional elevation that Italy.

He proposed an emotional farewell after his last home game as Rome Boss, but there seems to be a strong chance that Raniei’s last rush could be as a leader of Azurri.

Outsiders

Daniele de Rossi

Rome and Rossi Italy’s legend has been out of training since he left Giallorossi last September, but could have a tempting option as a player who knows what it is like to win the World Cup with Italy, after having done it in 2006.

De Rossi became the owner and president of the Club of the Ostamare series in January, but it is unlikely that these responsibilities would prevent him from jumping to the possibility of leading the national team.

Gennaro Gattuso

Another member of the 19 -year -old winning World Cup, Gattuso has already enjoyed a nomadic coaching career, working in Switzerland, Greece, France, Spain and Croatia, as well as in Italy.

The only platform that must show for its time in the mouth to this point is the Coppa Italy that it won with Napoli in 2020.

He left Hajduk divided in June, after taking them to a third place where the Croatian title were lost by only two points.

Like Rossi, there would be questions about whether Gattuso has the pedigree to run his country, while the temper could also be seen as a concern.

Roberto Mancini

The powers in the FIGC could be forgiven by the sense of temptation with regard to a return for the man who last guided them to the success of the tournament.

But they would also be convenient to remember that Mancini did not achieve the qualification for the World Cup of 2022, suffering an infamous defeat in North Macedonia in the Playoffs and that its stock has not increased since its resignation in 2023.

Mancini had a brief and unsuccessful spell as head of Saudi Arabia, with his most recent participation in football at any level as a consultant in Sampdoria, who was relegated to the B series this season. Although Italy could wish the Gloria that Mancini was delivered to Wembley in 2021, they would probably be better served to look at a new age instead of trying to recover the past.

Roberto de Zerbi

Although coaches Italy, who would otherwise be at the top of the FIGC list, could not be said, there are reasons to think that Zerbi could move away from Marseille.

De Zerbi tracked his impressive commission by Brighton and Hove Albion at the Premier League, heading to Marseille in a second place in League 1. While they met with the Paris Saint-Germain champion, a return to the Champions League a successful season for Marseille.

However, it was not a completely smooth first season in Provence for Zerbi. There were reports of a player player in April after it was said that Zerbi had refused to form after a loss of 3-1 in Reims. Subsequently, from Zerbi they were dismissed by De Zerbi and forwarding Neal Mauuay at a press conference.

Marseille lost only one of her last seven games after the defeat against Reims and Zerbi rejected a Tottenham approach to replace Ange Postecoglou. This would suggest that Zerbi is happy to Stade Velodrome, but the challenge of turning around for Italy and sorting -for the World Cup may be more attractive than the seemingly useless task of trying to interrupt PSG’s rule in France.

Zerbi’s appointment seems unlikely but cannot be ruled out.
