Pep Guardiola believes that his management position would have been in serious danger if he had experienced the mishap this season while training in Barcelona or Real Madrid.
Manchester City, under Guardiola, had a challenging 2024-25 campaign, its poorest since its inaugural season.
The reigning champions saw that their Premier League rule finished, finishing third place and the eventual winners Liverpool by 13 points.
The struggles were not limited to the league game. The city soon came out of both the Carabao Cup and the Champions League and suffered a surprising defeat against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final.
The most turbulent section came from the end of October to mid -December, when the team lost nine of the thirteen games.
Despite the fall, the city’s hierarchy remained in the support of Guardiola and even expanded its contract in November.
Reflecting on the situation, Guardiola said: “With the year we have, if it were Spain, would not be training in October, November or December.
“If it were a Barça or Madrid, they would have looted me.
“But here it wasn’t even a question. You have to have a little more patience.”
Guardiola also said as an example the recent leadership change of Real Madrid.
Despite win both LaLiga and the Champions League a year ago, Carlo Ancelotti has left to assume the national team of Brazil.
“Look at Carlo Ancelotti,” said Guardiola. “He won the Champions League and LaLiga four days ago and is now the coach in Brazil.”
With Pep still at the helm, Manchester City has begun to strengthen its squad ahead of the new season, achieving the signings of Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders.
Both City and Madrid will participate in the next Club World Cup, which starts this Saturday.
