The Oscars could expand the Best Picture category to 10 spots, but also limit nominees in other categories to just five — making for a more competitive race, but also resulting in inevitable snubs. Today The announcement of the Academy Awards brought a lot of glory to the box-office hits Bad and Dune: Part Twobut neither Best Picture nominee won recognition for its directors. That didn’t sit well dune star Josh Brolinwho went to defend Denis Villeneuve.
dune fans will remember that while Villeneuve received nominations in the categories of best film and best adapted screenplay for 2022. dune (lost both at TAIL), was also passed over for Best Director that year. His only nomination for the best director to date was with 2017 arrival (lost to La La Landby Damien Chazelle).
Brolin, who played Gurney Halleck in the dune movies and also collaborated on a couple of elaborate art book bindingstook to his Instagram stories to convey his reaction to Villeneuve’s snob. As Variety reports, was recorded speaking directly to the camera: “I just want to congratulate the dune best picture nomination, to Greig Fraser for cinematography, for best visual effects, special effects, for Patrice (Vermett) for production design and sound, I believe.
He continued. “Apparently, I’m going to quit acting because Denis Villeneuve wasn’t nominated. That’s just how this thing works. It doesn’t make sense to me. That’s fine. (Editor) Joe Walker, Denis Villeneuve, you deserve it. It’s a movie Amazing. I think it was even better than the first one. Congratulations to everyone.
This reference to “quitting acting” refers to an interview that Brolin did Variety in November 2024 where he made the initial statement: “If it’s not nominated this year, I’ll stop acting. It was a better movie than the first one. When I watched it, I felt like my brain was opened. It’s master , and Denis is one of our master directors. If the Academy Awards mean anything, they will recognize it.” (The trade also notes that Brolin posted a similar message on social media when Villeneuve was left off the Best Director list for the first time. dune.)
Presumably, there will be another chance to reward that hard work with Arrakis Dune Messiahsaid to be Villeneuve’s next project. If somehow the Hollywood Oscar voters drop the ball againhead straight to Brolin’s Instagram to commiserate.
