Pamela Anderson told Martha Stewart about her early days as a Playboy model.
During an interview for Elle January 2025 Digital Issue Stewart spoke with Anderson about her recent film The Last Dancer and her Oscar rejection.
Immersing herself in her career, Anderson and Stewart took a trip down memory lane to when they first became famous.

“Back to the movie. I can’t stop thinking about that person in the audition scene. … It has happened to all of us. These auditions that are so ridiculous and so heartless. You get a real feel for it,” Stewart said, referring to Anderson’s latest film.
Pamela replied: “I love that she doesn’t take no for an answer. She is about to leave, but then she turns and says: “What didn’t you like about it?” Although she indulged her heart in reassessing her life choices, she fought back.

“I had a similar experience when I was very young, going on modeling trips. They asked all the girls to bring bikinis, and after my interview with about 15 guys sitting at the table, they said, ‘Go get a your bikini,” Stewart said.
“And I asked, ‘Is a bikini required for the role?’ And the guy said, “No, but you’re here with us, so we might as well take a look at you.” And I just left the room, I was maybe 17 (years old) at the time, but I just wouldn’t put up with that shit.

“That’s the way I’ve been all along, I just wouldn’t put up with it,” Stewart said. “When you see other girls putting up with it because they need money or they need a job, it’s a difficult situation. I think it can get better after all these years.”
Anderson sympathized with Stewart and explained that her mother was a big reason she decided to pose for Playboy in October 1989.
“It’s hard to navigate a business based on physical beauty and naivety. You’re in this business and you want to please people. And you have a feeling that maybe it’s not right and you can find yourself in these dangerous situations,” Anderson said.
“When the Playboy cover (opportunity) came up, my mom said, ‘Do it.’
“I was such a shy young girl if you can believe it – I wanted to do everything to stop being ashamed. When the Playboy cover (opportunity) came up, my mom said, “Do it.” I didn’t know what it was going to lead to, but then it led to this wild and crazy life,” Anderson concluded.

“It was a woman’s choice to be in the magazine. It was my choice to be in the magazine, I wasn’t forced to do anything I wasn’t comfortable with. My first reaction was no and I spoke to my mother. And she said ‘Why not? Get out of this small town, go to Los Angeles,'” Anderson said Associated Press at that time.
“I’d never been on a plane before, I’d never been out of my little town, and I was scared to death. I got over a lot of my painful shyness. That’s for sure.”

Pamela replied: “No, no Oscar nomination, but I couldn’t even imagine it.” I got a SAG nomination, which is really exciting, and… it’s all just unexpected and exciting. I always say that winning is hard work. I have to do what I really love, and I had to do it for my soul.”
