Palisades fire burns homes as thousands evacuate in Los Angeles

The Palisades Fire in Los Angeles, California prompted mandatory evacuations as thick, thick smoke hung over the region.

Officials say the blaze grew from 20 acres to more than 200 acres about 20 minutes after it was reported at 10:30 a.m. local time.

The surge was caused by strong winds that put much of the state under a red flag.
