The International Cricket Council (ICC) is expected to announce a continental qualification system to decide the six participating teams of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. In response, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) plans to put pressure on the inclusion of national team in the Olympic stage.
Complete member nations such as Pakistan, New Zealand and Sri Lanka could lose the Olympic Games due to a new qualification format. The ICC approved a proposal that allowed only one team per continent to qualify during its recent AGM in Singapore. However, the decision received a reaction from some cricketing nations.
Cricket will return to the Olympic Games for the first time since 1900, with the Men’s T20 and female events scheduled from July 20 to 29 at the Los Angeles Games of 2028. Six teams will participate in both male and female T20 events.

India and Australia are expected to guarantee direct qualification based on their rankings in Asia and Oceania, respectively. Great Britain (Europe), South -Africa (Africa) and the United States will also qualify. The sixth slot is still uncertain, but it can be filled in another Asian country or a Caribbean team.
Pakistan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are unlikely to qualify for the event. It is worth mentioning that there are concerns about U.S. cricket governance, which can lead to disqualification.
The PCB is preparing to take formal actions to get a place at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028. Above all, the Council plans to send a letter to both the ICC and the Games Committee of the, requesting them to set a rating date at least one year before the games begin.
“Olympic Games are a prestigious event and, with the cricket included, we cannot afford to lose”, a PCB source I talked to Telecom Asia Sport.
“A letter will be sent to both the ICC and the Games Committee that urged them to announce a rating date, ideally a year before the Games,” added Source.
“PCB is in conversations with the NZC and will drive your suggestions of a proper cut date or a qualifying event to decide two or a team. Pakistan will definitely fight for an Olympic site, at least for the men’s team.”
Former Pakistan Captain Rashid Latif urged the PCB to take proactive measures to ensure that the team is ranked at the 2028 Olympic Games, adding that it is a valuable opportunity to win a medal.
“The Olympic Games are prestigious and there is a medal in play,” said Latif at www.telecomasia.net
“The PCB must relate to both the ICC and the Committee of the and suggest that it uses the classification of the T20 World Cup in March next year as a point of reference for qualification,” he added.
Pakistan is currently eighth place in the ICC T20I ranking, but still has the opportunity to rise before the qualification period.
