After missing out on the 2023-25 World Trials Championship (WTC). seriesPakistan suffered a double blow as the tourists were penalized for maintaining a slow over in the second and final Test against South Africa at the Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town.
The Pakistan cricket team has been fined 25% of its match fee and awarded five points in the 2023-25 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) for maintaining a slow deficit in the second and last test against South Africa at Newlands Cricket Ground. .
The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the penalty on Tuesday, January 7, after Pakistan were found to have fallen five runs short of the required target, taking into account time allowances. The governing body said the fine and points deduction were imposed by Richie Richardson, a member of the ICC’s elite panel of umpires at the Emirates.
The ICC said in a press release on Tuesday: “Pakistan have been fined 25 per cent of their match fee and penalized five ICC World Test Championship points for maintaining a slow overrun against South Africa in the second Test in Cape Town.”
In accordance with ICC regulations, teams they are fined five percent of their match fee for each more they fail to complete in the allotted time. Also, Pakistan have lost five World Test Championship points for this offence, according to the playing conditions.
The press release further reads: “In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with minimum overshooting offences, the players are fined with five percent of his match fee for each one that doesn’t bowl in the allotted time.
In addition, in accordance with ICC World Test Championship Playing Conditions Article 16.11.2, a team is penalized one point for each short. Consequently, five World Test Championship points have been deducted from Pakistan’s points total.”
Pakistan captain Shan Masood has accepted the penalty and admitted the offence, so a formal hearing is not required. The charge was issued by field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Nitin Menon, along with third umpire Alex Wharf and fourth umpire Stephen Harris.

Meanwhile, Pakistan showed great fight in the second innings with skipper Shan Masood scoring 145 and Babar Azam hitting 81 runs, but their efforts were not enough as Ryan Rickelton’s double ton and Temba Bavuma’s century already put them behind in Cape Town.
After scoring a mountainous 615 runs in the first innings, South Africa bowled out Pakistan for just 194 runs and enforced the follow-on. However, Pakistan showed great intent by scoring 478 runs in the second innings, but a target of 58 runs was too easy for South Africa to chase down in just 42 balls.
With this 10-wicket win in the Cape Town Test, South Africa clinched the trophy by whitewashing Pakistan in the two-match Test series 2-0. Notably, Pakistan lost all their matches in South Africa as the hosts whitewashed the men in green across all formats.
