Throughout his 16-year career, the winner of the ten-time world title Oscar de la hoya is a terrible competitor in the circle. But the boxer called “The Golden Boy” said in an interview in 2011 with Husband that the punch one to two of bondage and depression was “the greatest fighting of his life (his),” one who left him to consider suicide. De La Hoya, now 52, continues to talk openly about how to manage his joint disorders has been a lifelong battle.
De La Hoya has told several outlets that his introduction to alcohol was born of curiosity and opportunity – he would have slipped gips of beer on family functions as a child – but that presentation became a problem soon. He developed in part as a result of what he says was a physically and emotionally aggressive relationship with his parents. “I entered a lot of alcohol and drugs, and literally lost myself,” Fox Business In July 2023. He was seeking affection that he did not, he said. “My dad never told me, ‘I love you,’” he told Far journal that same month. “My mother never told me that she loved me … when I cry, he would start to strike me. That’s how bad it was.”
De La Hoya’s professional persona focused on his hardness and impermeable to pain, but behind the scenes it was self-medicinal to prevent overwhelming fear and shame. “I relied more on the alcohol than the cocaine,” De La Hoya told Univision in 2011. “It took me to a place where I felt safe; it took me to a place where I felt like no one (who could) could tell me anything; it took me to a place where I (could) reach out and grab my mother.”
As the father of six, De La Hoya has said he was not prepared to be a parent – and that his older children had suffered as a result of his emotional leave. “It comes to the point where you convince yourself that this is not,” he said Far Magazine. “This is scary. You are not worthy of this. You are not worthy of giving love. Then you start to feel sorry for yourself. Life just starts to spin and you are missing. All you want to do is drink and make drugs and escape … I always felt like I wasn’t worthy of anything, like I wasn’t worthy of love.” “
The former -athlete shares his eldest child, the son of Jacob, 27, with a former Toni Alvaado. He also shares his son Devon, 26, and his daughter Atiana, 25, with Exes Angelicque McQueen and Moakrespectively. He and his ex-wife, Millie CorretjerWelcome to the children of Oscar Jr., 19, Nina, 17, and Victoria, 11, before their division in 2016.
“I went through the re -making, I went through therapies,” he told the Press In July 2023. “At this time in my life, I’ve made the decision and I’ve prepared myself over the years to find a balance. It’s all a balance. Life is great. It’s really good at the moment. I’m happy, I’m working, I’m doing the things I’ve wanted to do on my terms … it’s like I’m doing my way for the first time ever.”
