It’s not every day that an actor in a successful live-action anime project sits down and interviews its creator in their native language, but Netflix One piece star Iñaki Godoy did this before the show second season.
In a recent video from Netflix Still watching the YouTube channelMonkey D. Luffy the actor Godoy sat down with Eiichiro Oda on the set of One Piece Location of Cape Town in South Africa to discuss what lies ahead about the Grand Line in the second season, and how Luffy became a beloved character.
“I got to see some actual filming, and especially the props, the massive sets, the special effects, the making of the wigs and costumes, the stunts,” Oda said. “I saw so many things and was really touched by everyone’s dedication.”
When Godoy asked Oda if he thought the acting was good, Oda responded by saying, “It was.” Naturally, Godoy burst into infectious giggles, making Oda laugh in return. Godoy’s next question, posed in remarkably fluent Japanese despite starting to learn the language in January, asked Oda why he made the events in the second season so challenging to adapt, since the first season of The Hat Paglia was already a huge undertaking. Another question, mind, which made Oda laugh when Godoy remarked how “huge and crazy” his adventure was before going to the Grand Line.
“It’s hard. I’m very tired,” said Godoy.
“In that universe, the Grand Line is the toughest of the seas. We need to shock the audience. That’s why there are giants, and, of course, many bounty hunters,” answered Oda, joking about the adventures who are waiting in the next season. “This should be a season full of new and surprising elements. That’s why it’s more challenging.”
The last issue of Godoy asked Oda how he came to Luffy and made him such a deep and attractive character, even if he seemed like a simple man at first blush.
“Luffy is an ideal child for me. When you become an adult and join a company, you can’t always do what you want. Entering society often means losing freedom. Luffy has the heart of a child, so he does what he wants wants,” said Oda. “This aspect is probably, for adults already working in society, and for children about to enter society, what makes Luffy so attractive.”
Oda was not remiss in throwing a compliment Godoy’s way, congratulating him on bringing Luffy back to life and energizing the public worldwide. The two then share a loving embrace. It is very sweet.
Along with Godoy, the cast members return on the Netflix journey One piece The live-action series features Mackenyu as Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero as Usopp, Taz Skylar as Sanji, Ilia Isorelys Paulino as Alvida, Jeff Ward as Buggy, and Michael Dorman as Gold Roger.
One pieceThe second season of the anime will also see a slew of new faces from the anime make the jump to live action. Key among the new faces during the trip (and the actors who will bring them to life) are:
Keeping their usual secrecy, Netflix and Tomorrow Studios have not yet disclosed the actor who will bring to life the doctor of the Straw Hat pirates, Tony Tony Chopper. All we’ve seen of the hard-working reindeer is a shot of him from behind, confirming – to the chagrin of some fans – that he won’t be a muppet but a little CGI guy. I hope the next one One piece sit-down (or teaser trailer) will show Chopper in all his cute glory.
In io9 review of the first season, we praised the Netflix show for not requiring viewers to be invested in the anime to appreciate it, writing: “The show was clean. It was slick. Everything came together, and at the end of the season, despite Luffy screaming again, he wanted a second season.”
In tandem with a second live-action season, Netflix also has plans in motion for an anime remake, titled The One Pieceanimated by WIT Studio. In short, now is as good a time as any to enter One piece– be it for the manga, the live action show, the ongoing anime, or its upcoming remake.
