On the wall of the League office, the Social Democrats Chinese Heroes for Freedom are spelled out with the slip of the court.
Party participants take turns in the microphone associated with a speaker. They stand in front of the flag that proclaims “ash rather than dust”, written in Chinese. Founded close to 20 years ago, the party is known as the last protest group in Hong Kong.
“Red lines are now everywhere,” says BBC Chan on In.
“Our decision to dissolve was because we faced a lot of pressure.”
She added that everything in Hong Kong became politicized, and she failed to tell more about the reasons.
The Party is the third major opposition party that blossomed this year in Hong Kong. The group, known for its street protests, said she had made the decision after a “careful discussion” and avoided “consequences” for its members.
The announcement of the fornication takes place in just a few days ahead of the fifth anniversary of the National Security Law imposed by Beijing. The party said it could not clarify the closure terms, but said she was faced with “intense pressure”.
“Over the 19 years, we have experienced the difficulties of internal disputes and almost total imprisonment of our leadership, watching the erosion of civil society, the disappearance of grassroots votes, the ubiquity of the red lines and the draconian suppression of dissent,” the statement reads.
Authorities said the National Security Law was needed to restore the order after a year of often fierce protests in 2019. But five years of criticism have been said to be used to dismantle political opposition.
In June, the Chinese official stated that the city was still hindered by enemy forces.
“We must see exactly that the elements of the chaos anti-Kita and Hong Kong are still relentless and update various forms of soft resistance,” Sai Balong said in a speech.
National Security Law criminalizes allegations such as diversion. In 2024, Hong Kong adopted a domestic national security law, known as Article 23, criminalizing crimes such as sedition and betrayal. Today, most of the political opposition, Hong Kong has either escaped or detained.
“I think it is not really safe to rule the political party. I think political rights have almost completely gone in Hong Kong,” said Deputy Chairman Dixon Chow.
On June 12, three members were fined by the magistrates for hanging on the flag on the street booth, raising money from the public without permission.
Critics say opposition groups face political persecution. Chow says the party’s bank accounts were closed in 2023. Over the past five years, six party members have been imprisoned.
“A place without any significant political party, then people will sooner or later forget how strong they will be if they can unite and come out in a collective manner,” Chow said.
“If I do nothing, why am I here in Hong Kong?”
He said that even if he was not politically active, he was afraid that he could still be a police target and putting pressure to leave Hong Kong by the authorities.
“The future is very difficult as a citizen. If you want to take advantage of your right as a citizen, it is very difficult. Not only for politicians or activists, even ordinary people need to think twice,” Chow said.
“This is a dilemma that I didn’t hope to face Hong Kong for being just an activist,” he added.
