Do you ever have the feeling that someone is watching you? You don’t know for sure who he is or why, but you can’t shake the feeling that a pair of eyes watch your every move.
It is a chilling feeling, one that is repeated too loyal in the movie WatchmanChloe Okuno’s annoying horror excitement film about a woman being watched, stalked and disturbed by an unknown person. The 2022 film received decent reviews when it was first released, but not enough people have been tested.
That should change as it arrives recently to Netflix, a recent Streamer has paid attention to the price of a genre that has been ignored in the past. Here are a few reasons why you should stream Watchman on Netflix right now.
A woman is waving while looking out a window in a viewer.
IFC moviesAt first glance, Julia (Maika Monroe) It seems to have been done. She has a loving husband, Francis (Karl Glusman), and a lovely flat in downtown Bucharest, Romania, who gives her a nice view of all the old buildings in their neighborhood. When Francis starts working longer hours, Julia is bored and begins to spy on her neighbors across the street. Most of them are not even at home, but one night, she sees a man’s weak outline in her flat that seems watching her.
She gradually realizes that this man has been watching her not only in his apartment, but throughout the city: on the streets outside their place, in a supermarket, and even in a film theater. Julia is increasingly being shocked as she hears reports of a serial murderer called “The Spider” wandering around the city. Is it stalked by “the spider”? Or is this viewer, no one can actually see except for it, the product of her imagination induced by boredom?
For a good chunk of the movie, Watchman Maintains this interesting ambiguity very effectively, and keeps you guessing whether Julia is truly delicate or observant eerie. And while the finale is not so vague, and contains some shocking violence that seems more homely in a traditional horror film, the film still achieves its goal of creating a sense of danger about the unknown. You don’t know where it’s going, and for most of its running time, you’re afraid to find out.
A woman looks at a man on steps in the viewer.
IFC moviesLike most low budget films, Watchman makes excellent use of its locations. Shot in Bucharest, a city that does not usually appear in a film like this one, Watchman Feels like it happens in a dreamy state that reflects Julia’s status as an American exile away from her homeland and a woman neglected by her busy husband.
Director Chloe Okuno spends the majority of the film following her lonely heroine around as she explores her adopted city. And while the city is beautiful, it is also strangely empty and shady. You get the feeling that anyone might be lurking just around the corner or on the edge of your peripheral vision. That sense of disquiet that makes Watchman Incredibly effective as a horror movie (it’s really scary) and as a portrait of a woman who may be going crazy.

Watchman Is it not the first time of the lead star Maika Monroe in the horror rodeo. The actress gained fame in the Creeper Cepper It follows In 2015, and since then has come back to the genre with games under the radar like 2018’s Rat and 2019’s Villain. But Watchman She is probably her best film yet, because she demonstrates her core strengths as an actress.
There is a key scene in Watchman Where Monroe’s character is in a film theater that is almost empty when she realizes that the man who has been watching him maybe sitting a few feet behind her. It is a glittering moment, and Monroe conveys several things at once: uncertainty, fear, panic and the desperate urge to flee.
His Julie is not a last screaming woman, though; She is certainly plagued by suspicion, but she is also led by common sense. Some of that is in the script, but also derives from Monroe, and she makes Watchman Vulnerable, even when it trips in its messy peak from time to time.
Netflix may be the home of such budget fires as The electric state with Millie Bobby Brown and Chris PrattBut he also stages less -known films as Watchman and reveals them to a wider audience. The film has not yet cracked the top 10 of the Streamer, but just like its titular boogeyman, it has a funny way to crawl on you.
