One of Kraven the Hunter’s Weirdest Moments has been added in Post

If you have seen Kraven the Hunter or just been online, you probably know about a strange moment that occurs in the middle of the movie. After being informed that his henchmen have died trying and failing to kidnap the titular hunter, Alessandro Nivola’s Aleksei Systevich lets out a scream that sounds like a dying machine of some kind. You’d think it was meant to set up his transformation into the Rhino later in the movie, or even get some kind of reaction from his top goon. But neither happens, so it only exists as a weird moment in a movie that could have been more interesting in general.

What happened here? According to Nivola in a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporterhe had initially let out a silent scream during the basic shooting because he decided to do it at that moment. It seemed to pay off, as the crew laughed, and director JC Chandor later told them that the shot would be kept in the final cut of the film. But at some point during post-production, things changed, and that strange sound it makes was something done in post-production. He thinks it’s not as effective as the quiet cry, and he might have a point, given how memetic he’s become in the past month.

In that same interview, Nivola gave some thoughts on why The needs has been critically raked over the coals. He said being on set was a “really joyful experience”, and he enjoyed “running wild” with Chandor and co-star Christopher Abbott. (The three first teamed up in the 2014 film Chandor A more violent year.) He said that there did not seem to be production problems from his perspective, and he noted some of the problems of the film “probably start to play in the editing. On this type of films, you hear about all the disputes in the studio, and maybe there were too many chefs.

In spite by Kraven negative reception, Nivola took it in stride. He is grateful for the reviews that praised his performance, but otherwise, it is good that he avoids the “black hole” that can be critics and fan responses. It probably helps that this isn’t the only movie he’s been in lately: you can also see him in The Brutalist and The next room, both are in theaters now, or will be later in January.
