South Korea ended a dramatic day as investigators suspended an attempt to arrest ousted President Yoon Suk-yeol after a six-hour standoff with security forces outside his home.
“We have determined that an arrest is not possible,” said the Corrupt Practices Investigation Office (CIO), which investigated Yun’s short-term declaration of martial law.
“The next steps will be decided after the review,” the IT director said, adding that Yoon’s “abandonment of the legal process” was “deeply regrettable.”
Yun’s supporters, who had been camped outside the presidential residence for days, cheered with song and dance when the suspension was announced. “We won,” they chanted.
