A 57-year-old Australian police officer was shot dead in rural property in Tasmania, following a home return warrant, police say.
On Monday morning, the officer arrived at the house in the Northern deputy, near the city of Ulverton when he was fired by a “member of the public,” the Tasmania police said.
The second police officer returned the fire, injuring the suspect’s hand. The suspect surrendered and later received treatment at the hospital, police said.
Death shots in Australia remain rare, which have strict weapons laws.
After firing on Monday, a crime scene was created in the Northern deputy, and the coroner was reported, a police press secretary said, adding that “there is no constant threat to the public.”
“The security of our officers is our number one priority, and sees how tragically killed in these circumstances, died in these conditions,” said the Commissioner Donna Adams on Monday on Monday.
“We know that the police may be risky, but we expect every officer to finish their shift and return home to their families.”
Police do not call the officer because of respect for their family, as some family members should still be informed of his death, said Ms Adams.
She described him as a “real, reliable police officer” who has served society for 25 years.
On Monday morning he was accompanied by a “senior and experienced sergeant” to “serve as a warrant approved by the court to return the house,” said Ms Adams.
She added that the officer was shot dead, making his way out of the car to the front of the house. She also praised her colleague, who managed to seek help, while “in a situation of danger and danger”.
Ms Adams said the investigation of the incident was being conducted.
Police also said the support of the well -being provided to the participants and the victim.
In his statement, Tasmania Prime Minister Jeremy Roclef called the incident a “strange tragedy”.
Everyone who was honored to know this officer, especially his family and his colleagues … The love of the whole state is with you today. “
In Australia, shooting is relatively rare, which presented some of the most violent firearms after 35 people were killed in a lone militant to Port -Arthur, Tasmania, in 1996.
