It was a difficult start for Mother of God in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal game against Georgia on Thursday.

Defensive lineman Bryce Young, a true freshman, was called for a back-to-back running penalty after colliding with Georgia player Drew Miller. The first resulted in a 5-yard penalty, but the second penalty was declined.

Things didn’t look much better in Notre Dame’s opener.
Leonard was called for an illegal forward pass after making two pass attempts. His first pass was picked off by Georgia junior Michael Williams. After he caught the ball that ricocheted off Williams’ hand, Leonard threw another incomplete pass.

After the first quarter, the match was tied – 0:0. Georgia’s defense limited Notre Dame to 24 yards in the first quarter. Leonard completed just one pass for 14 yards. In the second quarter, the teams exchanged field goals.

The Sugar Bowl will be played Thursday at the Superdome in New Orleans after being postponed the day after the Bourbon Street terror attack that killed at least 15 people and injured dozens.
