North Korea has announced that his recently open seaside resort would not receive foreign tourists.
The Wonsan Kalma Coastal Area, which opened on July 1, was promoted as a key part of North Korean leader Kim Jong UN to enhance tourism.
During its opening, the resort was raised as an attraction for both locals and foreigners. But this week, a report on the North Korean tourism website states that foreigners are “temporarily” not allowed to visit.
Last week, the first Russian tourists came to the resort in Vonsan – approximately at the same time when Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met Kim in the city.
Lavrov recognized the seaside development as a “good tourist attraction”, and said he hoped he would become popular among the Russians, AFP reports. Both countries should launch direct flights between Moscow and Pyongyang by the end of the month.
The Russian guide previously told NK NEWS that they had planned a few more trips to the resort in the coming months.
Vonson, a city along the eastern coast of North Korea, is home to some missile facilities of the country and a large maritime complex. It is also where Kim spent most of his youth among the festive villas belonging to the elite of the country.
The new seaside resort has been exhibited in 4 km (2.5 miles) with hotels, restaurants, shopping centers and water parks. According to state media, it has a capacity of about 20,000 people.
However, since the resort began construction in 2018, human rights groups protested against the alleged cruel treatment of their workers. They indicate reports that people are forcing long hours to complete a large -scale project in tight conditions and lack of compensation.
On June 24, Russian ambassadors took part in the completion ceremony with Kim and his family.
Last year, North Korea allowed Russian tourists to visit North Korea after a long -term tourism suspension during a pandemic.
In February, North Korea also began receiving tourists from the West, including Australia, France, Germany and the United Kingdom. However, a few weeks later, this stopped tourism, not to mention why.
