Sci-fi can be applied to any genre to create something new and different, to the Detective Noir with Changed carbon to Westerns with FireflyBut there is one combination that has not been dubbed in over 40 years: Sci-Fi romance. StarterSci-fi romance perfected in 1984 with Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen, an alien story falling in love with a human being to the point that he was holding up today despite the dated special effects. There were previous stories and stories after alien/human love, but no one has balanced the two different genres as specialized as the legendary Director of the legendary horror John Carpenter.
Cross Country Tour with Starman
Starter Rises with an alien race responding to the message found within the Voyager 2 probe, but assuming it was an invitation to visit the alien scout, ready for the army to fire on his craft and an accident in Wisconsin. Using a string of hair, the energy-being inside creates a body for itself and turns in Jeff Bridges (Starman, not really Jeff Bridges), the dead husband of Jenny Hayden (Karen Allen). Fails to convey his true intentions to Jenny, she believes at first that the alien Hijacked him on his way to Arizona and a meeting designed with an alien spacecraft.
Together, Jenny and Starman travel cross country as they avoid the authorities and start bonding. They are kept safely thanks to the alien spheres, highly advanced devices that can perform miracles, from bringing back deer to save them from an explosion, and every act of kindness brings the alien closer to Jenny’s heart. With only a limited number of spheres, the pair options decrease as they approach their goal and the full force of the army begins to move in, which is a complete gliche, but it is rarely done as well as it is here.
The genre moves from sci-fi Romance and back again flows with the story and the end result is much more graceful and elegant than more recent sci-fi romance films Traveler or About time. Carpenter, two years being removed from releasing the cult hitting The thingnever made a romantic film before, and would never be again, but he was clearly the talent for it. The Director achieved the performance of Golden Globe and nominated for Oscar by Jeff Bridges, rare for Sci-Fi film, and won the Saturn Award for Best Actor.

Allen has the ability to convey a real human emotion in Outlandish situations, making it a shame that she did no more genre work in her long and historic career. Critics at the time thought that too, with Allen and Bridges being praised for their performances as the film went on to win $ 28 million during its theatrical run, barely squeezing past its $ 24 million budget, but turning a profit thanks to video rents.
The 80s were a notable decade for sci-fi movies, Starter Even shown alongside David Lynch Dune To give an idea how full the year was with genre films. In the coming decades, Carpenter Sci-Fi romance has been aged as fine wine, and ever since, no director has been able to surpass what the horror master achieved in his one and only shoot in the genre. In fact, the film is considered so high, until Shawn Levy, Director Deadpool & WolverineHe stopped trying to redo the film, declaring that no script could be with the original.
