Rahul Dravid finished his term as leading coach of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) ahead of the season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 on Saturday, August 30. The departure of the former Captain of India has caused interest in various franchises, with Kolkata Knight Riders exploring the possibility of signing it.
Dravid took over as the main coach of the Rajasthan Royals after helping India winning the World Cup of 2024 T20. He managed his responsibilities despite recovering from a knee injury. The Royals had a disappointing campaign at IPL 2025, finishing the ninth at the point table with only four wins from 14 games in the league.
Currently, Kolkata Knight riders do not have a main coach after the resignation of Chandrakant Pandit last month. According to a telegraph report, the franchise is studying Rahul Dravid for the position.

The report also mentioned that KKR’s CEO, Venky Mysore, is in the western Indies for the Caribbean Premier League and Dravid discussions may begin once he returned to Mumbai. However, it is not yet known if Dravid is ready to take on a new role of coaching at this stage.
“ Knights CEO, Venky Mysore, is currently in the West Indies for the Caribbean Premier League and a definitive movement to have Dravid on board could begin once he returned to Mombay. However, much uncertainty is left to be ready to take on a new role, ” sources said to the telegraph.
The report added that the Knight Riders are interested in securing Rahul Dravid in a multi -year coaching agreement. However, the former Captain of India and the winning coach of the T20 World Cup want to take some time before committing to a new role.
KKR coach Chandrakant Pandit joined the franchise after the 2022 season. The Kolkata team had a disappointing campaign in 2023, finishing seventh place. However, Pandit guided KKR to his third title IPL under Captain Shreyas Iyer in 2024.
Prior to the 2025 season, KKR separated with Iyer and named Ajinkya Rahane as captain. The team fought and finished the season in eighth place. They won five of their 14 games and lost their playoffs closely. The franchise now seeks a new coach configuration for the next edition.
Rahul Dravid had moved away from the Indian team’s training to focus on the family, but accepted the role of Rajasthan Royals’ coach because of his bond with the owners of the franchise, particularly Manoj Badale.
Dravid played a key role in developing young talents during his time with the Royals. However, his second career with the franchise ended after a single season, as he refused to take a higher position within the configuration.
Dravid first joined the Royals as a player in 2011, captured the team in 2012 and 2013, and then served as team and mentor director in 2014 and 2015. He scored 1,276 runs into 46 games for Rajasthan Royals with an average of 29.67 and a strike rate of 110.86, including seven half a century.
