Sam Kerr has reached another milestone in his illustrious career, achieving his own signature boots.
The Chelsea and Australia striker has joined Nike to launch his first player Edition Mercurial Superfly, a design that pays tribute to his country of origin, his career and one of his largest sports idols.
The boots come on a light sand base, a glance on the beaches of Australia, with teal, pink and orange flashes that go through them to reflect the ocean, sunsets and rocky landscapes.
“The colors of the boot are what I think when I think of the house: the ocean and the sun’s sunsets,” Kerr explained. “It’s a reminder of where I am.”
Personal touches are scattered throughout the design, including their “consistent” brand engraved on top of script as tattoos and subtle references to their play style (“Forever Forward”) and their western Australian roots (“Perth Swagger”).
Perhaps the most amazing detail is the daring strip that reduces the laundry finger, inspired by Cathy Freeman’s unforgettable gold medal at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. At the top of the strip Long quoted as one of his heroes.
Its signature is sealed on the heel to round off the design, giving each couple the feeling of being signed personally.
Nike is also launching a wider collection to go with the boot. A general field shoe echoes the same color palette and includes the personal messages of Kerr sewn on the tongue and the top, while a large velvet hood sweatshirt arrives in TEAL and presents phrases linked to his career: “Well, who I am, who you are”, “Golden in 2017”, “You never know”, and “I vs the world”.
For a player who has been at the top of the women’s party for more than a decade, he feels a long time. But with a personal, vibrant and symbolic design, it is clear that the wait has only made the end result much sweeter.
