Nico Williams wants to “make history” after rejecting Barcelona for the new athletic club contract

Nico Williams has doubled in his commitment to Athletic Club, rejecting Barcelona’s interest in continuing his career in Bilbao.

The International Spain, which played a key role in the Red Triumph Euro 2024, attracted strong attention this summer of Barcelona’s size, Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Chelsea.

According to reports, Barcelona was ready to trigger its release clause of € 58 million in an attempt to bring the end to Camp Nou, a year after registering its interest.

However, Williams recently signed an extension of contract with Athletic Club until June 2035, and has made it clear that his heart remains in the Basque Country.

“We have a long season ahead and some ambitious goals, such as playing in the Champions League, which all players dream of,” said Nico.

“What could be better than to do it with the club of my life? I want to continue to make history here in San Mamés, with fans, with my family and full of enthusiasm.”

Mikel Gonzalez, football director at Athletic Club, greeted the decision as an important victory for the club.

“He is a unique and exceptional player, and retaining this talent in Athletic is a fantastic news,” said Gonzalez.

Williams’ loyalty is especially significant, as his long connection to the club. He joined the Athletic Youth Academy at the age of only 11, and now, at the age of 22, is one of the most exciting young people in European football.

Williams will continue to share the pitch with his older brother, Inaki Williams, who has been appointed first -team captain for next season.

“We both have always dreamed of this moment,” Nico shared.

“My brother is a model for everyone, especially for me. I think he is the best person to be captain and I can’t wait to see him carrying his arm for a long time.”
