New Zealand stops funding on Cook Islands over Chinese transactions

New Zealand has stopped millions of dollars in Cook’s islands because of the broad transactions that his smaller in the Pacific neighbor made with China.

Velington, the largest Cook Island sponsor, said he had been obscured by the transactions that were reached in February, covering infrastructure, tourism, technology and possibly significant sea.

Fresh financing will not be considered until Cook’s islands “take concrete steps to repair relationships and restoration,” Winston’s Foreign Minister Piers said.

Financing NZ $ 18.2 million ($ 11 million; 8 million pounds) stops when among the US allies, including New Zealand and Australia, in New Zealand and Australia, over the rise of China in a quiet region.

“Financing is based on high bilateral relations,” said the press -secretary Peters on Thursday.

“New Zealand hopes the steps will be taken quickly to solve the problems of New Zealand so that this support can be restored as soon as possible,” the press secretary added.

Cook Islands replied, saying that “decided to resolve (issue) as urgency”, adding that over the years he “highly appreciated” assistance in the development of New Zealand.

“The constructive dialogue continues, and Cook’s islands remain committed to close interaction with New Zealand to understand where their problems are lying and how they can be solved,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The last step of New Zealand also comes when Prime Minister Christopher Luxan is on an official visit to China, where he will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday.

Press Socialist Peters said he did not worry that Beijing could negatively consider this step by noting “special relations” Velington with Cook islands.

Cook’s deals are part of China’s broader company to Woo Dowly but strategic Pacific countries. Beijing has previously signed Safety Deal she signed up with Solomon Islands in 2022 What were the Western nations.

In February, Prime Minister Cook Islands Mark Brown said his deals with China are based on his country’s “long-term interests” and tried to assure his neighbors in Australia and New Zealand that they do not replace their “long-standing relations”.

China also stated that the transactions were not supposed to resist anyone in the region

The transactions caused protests to Roratg – the largest of the Cook – and the voting without confidence in Brown in the parliament, which he eventually survived.

New Zealand has what is known as the Free Association in relations with Cook Islands, and helps the latter in defense and foreign affairs. Over the past three years, Velington has provided NZ 194 million dollars in the Cook Islands, according to statesmen.

Cook -Ailnder also holds the passports of New Zealand. About 15,000 cooks live in its country, but about 100,000 lives in New Zealand and Australia.

In the cultural plan, Cook Maori, which make up the majority of the population, are also closely linked, but different from the New Zealand Maori.

These close connections explain why the first deals with China have led to such strong reactions.

Even before that, the Cook Islands had already shown signs of the desire to distract. At the end of last year he refused to submit his own passport After a public protest.
