Beauty and the bester chronicles a real -life event that took place in 2012 in South Africa, when a man named Tabo bester guilty for raping and murdering Nomfundo Tyhulu, his love at the time.

In addition to his conviction for murdering his girlfriend, Bester had been convicted of rape and theft a year earlier.
