The Deep space nine Season 1 finale “In the hands of the prophets” inadvertently made Star Trek’s history by breaking with The next generation A tradition of cliffs ending in the season. This helped the side -effect to establish its own identity, but there would be an early idea for this chapter destroy the finale by tying it directly to the adventures of the Enterprise-D. That’s because the DS9 producers have toy with the idea of making this finale a TNG cross where Picard, Sisko, and their two crews would have to fight against Cardassian invasion.
On paper, this would have put the first Deep space nine Finishing connection with “Emissary,” the Premiere episode which included memorable cameo by Captain Picard. However, Rick Berman decided to kill this crossing scheme, urging Michael Piller at the time to find a different approach. “In the hands of the prophets” shares the religious themes of “Emissary,” but by ditching the plans for ambitious Tng Crossover, the controversial producer Berman, may have saved this spinoff show on accident in its earliest days by forcing DS9 to stand by its own merit.
To understand why the original plans for this Deep space nine Finishing would have been catastrophic, you need to look closer at the rest of season 1. Although there were great chapters there (“Duet” was an early demonstration of the potential of the show), too many early DS9 relyed on gameos of TNG characters. In addition to Picard making Cameo in “Emissary” and the constant presence of Miles and Keiko O’Brien, the first season the characters returned TNG Lursa, B’etor, Q, Vash, and Lwaxana turning.
Other TNG characters would appear later in this spinoff, most prominent among them Worf and his fellow -klingon, Gowron. While these characters have made great additions to Deep space nineThey also show why that first ending of TNG’s crossing would have been catastrophic. Such a chapter would have ensured that DS9 would always be in the shadow of TNG, and producers would have been required to bring even more familiar characters and plot points into the score goose.
Now, hard core TNG fans might not have thought Deep space nine Finish, especially if he secured more appearances from Captain Picard and other familiar characters. But the truth -free -wing -d -is -dain is that DS9’s originality is its greatest strength, and to this day it remains the best Star Trek Show Because it’s like no other in the franchise. And if he took his first ending of our attention from characters like Sisko so Picard and the crew might have received even more attention, then DS9 would have withered on the vine ever do it alone.
Trek Star: The next generation and Deep space nine They are both great shows, but they are completely different in tone, characterization, storytelling, and so much more. By ensuring that “in the hands of the prophets” had not become a TNG crossing, Rick Berman gave this Spinoff the opportunity to develop his own style and voice. Very soon, the whole world knew what Sisko was trying to tell us back when Q … he not Picard, and he and his show would do something completely different from anything we have seen before.
