Dautilus is the kind of show that captivates me. Not because of anything in the actual show because I didn’t watch it. Instead, I am captivated by the presumed response to the show (and its production history, which we will touch) because it seems to be a secret success. The Premiere episode was the largest audience AMC for Première since last year The Walking Dead: Those who live. And back stream Charts, the show has done amazingly on AMC+ this last month.
So why it feels like Dautilus Isn’t there really an existing show? Why does this hefty production that obviously echo with viewers feel like it’s nothing at all in the land culture landscape?
Dautilus originally supposed to appear Disney+. Mouse House produced the show but pulled out of his distribution directly on their platform after the production wrapped. Instead, they sold it to different entities depending on the location of the distribution. For example, the United Kingdom got the show on Prime Video eight months before it for the first time in the United States on AMC and their streaming service, AMC+.
In the end, what was intended to be a potential flagship series for Disney+ was sold to the highest bidder. But, that doesn’t seem to have slowed interest in the show for potential audiences. The show has done well on streaming and even at the top of AMC+ barely a week ago.
So we return to my initial question: why he felt like no one had actually watched Dautilus?
With streaming services becoming Almighty in our consumer culture, the barrier to shows becomes true cuts is much thicker than in the past. The size of the TV shows produced and pushed by their respective studios is absolutely scary. There is so much noise when you step back and look at the big picture. Not to mention that brand loyalty becomes a problem. If you get Netflix or HBO Max Or Paramount+ (Blech) and enjoy it, there is no huge motivation to pay for another streaming service.
So why would you go out of your way to watch a show like Dautlius? Even if it wins decent praise verbally, are you really going to sign up for AMC+ just to watch that same show? I know there is a churning culture with streaming where people sign up for a service and cancel it immediately for one month of access. Maybe folks do that? I would love to hear such testimonials.
Even so, a show like Dautilus Doing well on streaming but showing any real stronger effect in the larger pop culture discussion tells me that the streaming barrier remains a harder obstacle to clear for interesting shows. If a show likes Dautilus He has an audience, he does not translate into the “water cooler” culture of entertainment discussion. He may be liked but certainly doesn’t feel anyone is talking about it. Hopefully even this piece will get someone to look at the show. In an age of endless content, curation is more important than ever. Let’s hope shows like Dautilus Get loving curators to make sure they don’t disappear completely.
