In an official statement published by New Zealand Cricket (NZC), Kiwi’s lead coach Rob Walter said they are disappointed when seeing Tom Latham discarded the game, but reaffirmed that he would try to make the pattern available for the second game. He made:
“It is very disappointing that Tom lacks the first test, as a captain, but also as an integral part of the team,” said Walter.
“It’s never great when you lose the captain, who is a world-class opening batter and a great team man, but he said we will work hard to have it available for the second test.
“We will continue to evaluate and check if a replacement player is necessary, but in this phase we hope he will recover in time.”

Rob Walter said that Mitchell Santner has a strong understanding of the game and supported him to do a great job as a test captain. Said:
“Mitch did a wonderful job with the T20 template in this recent series. He was excellent from the point of view of the strategy and understood the game.
“Although the format is different, it certainly has the respect of the players and will be supported by some experience cricketers with great experience, so I trust that he will do a great job.”
