Former Australia Mitchell Johnson has criticized the team led by Pat Cummins for their performance at the World Test Championship in South Africa. Johnson stated that Josh Hazlewood prioritized the IPL about Cricket’s national team and urged selectors not to choose the Bowling Big Four.
Josh Hazlewood took only two doctors during the loss of five weeks against South Africa. He decided to join the IPL shortly after recovering from a side strain. Hazlewood returned to the action a few days after the League resumed and helped the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to secure its first IPL title.
Mitchell Johnson questioned the interpretation of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon. Johnson added that the Bowling Big Four should no longer be considered automatic selections.
Your daily dose of cricket!
“Our” Big Four “Mitchell Starc’s Bowling Attack, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon cannot be taken for granted as a lock that was advanced,” Johnson wrote in the Australian west.
“We have seen worries about Hazlewood’s physical form in recent years and his decision to prioritize returning to the delayed India Premier League about his national team preparations raised his eyebrows. Lyon did not look like the best day,” he added.
The IPL 2025, originally planned from March 22 to May 25, extended unexpectedly on June 3 after a week suspension. This reprogramming involved challenges for the players of South -Africa and Australia, as the final of the World Test Championship was scheduled for June 11.
While many cricketers left the IPL after the League stage, Mitchell Starc refused to return. Josh Hazlewood played in the Royal Challengers Bengaluru final on June 3. The pacer of his right arm flew to London to join the Australian template, leaving it with a limited time of preparation for the WTC final.
Mitchell Johnson raised his concern about the aging of Australia’s aging, emphasizing that many players are over 30 years old. He asked if this was the right mentality and requested a change of focus on the future. Johnson urged the selectors to invest in players like Sam Konstas, Josh Inglis and Scott Boland.
“ If veteran players remain around ashes as shipments, it wonders if this is the right mentality. It is crucial that we embrace the future and create confidence in the selection of our next test players. Players in the Strip like Sam Konstas, Josh Inglis and Scott Bland, despite being 36 years old, are a different mentality.
Johnson also stated that Cameron Green at number 3 and Marnus Labuschagne as a opener are not sustainable options. He also compared the poor form of Labuschagne with the promotion of Steve Smith at the opening during his own patch.
“ It is clear that Green did not work well, out of 4 and 0, and with only five balls for the game. And the way he went out to Kagiso Rabada at the two entries, he might not adapt to this position. But the real problem comes from Marnus Labuschagne Form, similar to what we saw with Steve Smith, who opened a little bit.
