Brazil’s Social Security Minister Carlos Lupa resigned nine days after the police presented a major corruption scandal that cheated $ 1.1 billion ($ 829 million).

Federal police have claimed that over the last decade, the National Social Security Institute (I INSS) has made unauthorized deductions made by millions of pensioners.

The money was allegedly paid by several associations and trade unions, which were then shared with corrupt government officials.

Lupia always denied any violations and stated that he had ordered the investigation as soon as he heard about these allegations.

“I make this decision with confidence that my name was not mentioned at any moment during the investigation,” Lupa wrote on X, announcing resignation.

“I hope that the investigations go on their natural course, determine those who respond and punish, with rigor, those who used their positions to harm the workers,” he wrote.

Assets worth more than $ 177 million were confiscated – including luxury cars, jewelry and more than $ 200,000.

Fraud was allegedly involved in registering pensioners as members of the pensioners without their consent, but as a result, they had the money regularly calculated from their membership benefits.

Police said this scheme is aimed at some of the poorest areas of the country where pensioners are unlikely to notice fraud or complain about it.

Last week, the InSS head resigned the charges, and six civil servants were removed from their posts, Federal Police said.

Investigators focus on more than 6 billion real ones, which, in their opinion, were distracted from 2019-2024, but how much this money was illegally, remains unclear.

The Director of the Inss budgets and finances, Florian’s Debora, said an operational group would be created to return the missed money, but at this stage they are still trying to determine the size of the fraud.

Carlos Lupu is the second person in the government of President Luis Initia Loul to Silva to lose his position because of the accusations of corruption in less than a month.

In early April, the Minister of Communications Yuselina Filkho resigned after he was charged with bribery in 2022.

Loul himself spent 1.5 years in prison in 2018-2019 for corruption, but later the conviction was thrown away that he allowed him to run – and win – his third term of the President of Brazil.
