Evangelical Christian and former leading current -Mike Hakobi was confirmed by the new US ambassador to Israel.
Former Governor Arkansas has long been a passionate supporter of Israel. It strongly supports Jewish settlements in the Palestinian territories, which are considered illegal in accordance with international law – although Israel refuses it.
“This is a great day for the Israeli-American Alliance,” said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, joining other members of his government in celebrating the voting results on Wednesday.
The Senate supported Hakabi for 53 to 46 years, largely on the party, only one Democrat John Fetterman supports him.
However, many Democrats were critical of his previous statements about the current war.
Democratic senator Jerry Nadler said last month that Hakabi was “very unusable” for role.
Nadler also accused him of participating in a “brazen refusal of the existence of the Palestinian people”, citing a 2017 press conference, where Hakobi said “there was no such thing as a Palestinian.”
Hakobi holds his post at a time when the gas has little sign of a new ceasefire and the return of other hostages.
He also often expressed his support in the accession of the occupied Western shore, and this year in Israel called right -wing politicians in Israel.
But during his interrogation by the Senate Committee he sought to play some of his past statements, saying He denied the support of the Palestinians.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said the appointment of Hakabi would “strengthen an inviolable connection between our peoples” after a phone call between them.
The Israeli Prime Minister also shared his congratulations, calling Hakabi a “dear friend” in the X.
Netanyahu has just returned from Washington, where he stood next to US President Donald Trump, saying the world that he was in direct negotiations with Iran – the main regional opponent of Israel – and praised Turkish President Erdogan – whom Israel views as a potential threat to Syria.
Speaking on Wednesday, Trump said Hakobi would be “fantastic” in his new role.
“He is going to bring home bacon,” he said from the Oval office, “though Bacon is not too big to Israel. I had to clear it. “
