Meta makes Oakley smart glasses for athletes

In an apparent effort to get tanned meatheads excited about products that were invented by a bunch of pasty-faced nerds, Meta is teaming up with sports. Oakley signature sunglasses to make a new breed of smart glasses.

Bloomberg reported Tuesday that the two companies had joined in a partnership of smart glasses. The glasses will be sold to athletes, according to the report. Citing “people with knowledge of the matter,” the news outlet outlines some of the ways Meta plans to diversify its smart lens product base in the coming years:

… First, the company plans to introduce its current Ray-Ban glasses in new markets. Second, Meta is expanding its smart glasses technology to other fashion brands from its partner Luxottica Group SA. That includes a new version – called “Supernova 2” – which is based on Oakley’s Sphaera glasses. This model, which changes the camera to the center of the lens frame, will be aimed at cyclists and other athletes.

What could help you ride a bike better than a pair of picture-taking sunglasses and field phones? While details on how such glasses would work are currently slim, the whole idea seems a bit ridiculous. Bloomberg notes that while Meta’s glasses don’t currently provide a true AR experience, this is something the company is working overtime to achieve. A more recent model is currently being developed that “will include a display on the bottom of the right lens that projects information into the user’s field of view,” writes Bloomberg. Users will be able to “run simple software applications, view notifications, and view photos taken by the device,” he adds. Right, why so indeed help to ride a bike.

God knows because Zuck wants to make these things happen so badly but clearly it is the way of the future. Meta has already had a fair amount of success in the smart glasses market due to its collaboration with Ray-Ban. Now, as it seeks to expand its audience, it makes sense that the company seeks to reach different segments of the public. I guess as long as he sucks at Trump, he probably thinks he should suck at Trump’s base as well (which is to say, police officers).

Bloomberg notes that Meta’s push into the smart lens market may also be a way for the company to find useful applications for the other product line it has spent years developing: metaverse stuff and its virtual reality software, which has spent metric fucktons of money on development. Since full glasses and headphones didn’t work so well, the next best thing is to convert everyone’s sunnies into little metaverse conduits.
