Meta confirms it will keep fact-checkers outside the US ‘for now’

Meta says it plans to keep its fact-checking program outside the United States for now, though it may eventually expand elsewhere.

“We’ll see how it goes as we move it over the years,” Meta’s head of global business, Nicola Mendelsohn. he told Bloomberg in a report from Davos on Monday. “So nothing changes in the rest of the world at the moment, we’re still working with those fact checkers around the world.”

Meta had put up the fact-checking guardrails in place above many years in response to criticism about how his platform was being used to spread misinformation. With a new administration entering the White House, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram announced earlier this month that they would replace their fact checkers with a community notes systemsimilar to what is in place at Elon Musk’s X.

The company may face obstacles to implement its new program elsewhere in the world, especially in Europe, which has regulations such as the Digital Services Act (DSA) in place to curb the spread of misleading content.
