Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni said US import tariffs on the European Union imports, after US President Donald Trump announced that he would start to charge 20% of the EU goods.
Meloni is one of the many world leaders who respond to Trump’s “Liberation Day” ads, which include a universal 10% basic tariff for all imports in the United States since 5 April.
About 60 countries – including the EU – will suffer more steady tariffs from April 9. Some of the highest tariffs will be charged in smaller countries, such as Lesotho, which was reached by a 50% collection.
Trump said the measures would “make America again”, adding that he was “very good” in his decisions.
Meloni, an ally Trump, said the EU tariffs “will not fit any of the parties,” referring to the EU and the United States – but that it will work for a transaction with the United States to “prevent trade war.”
Her Spanish counterpart Pedro Sanchez said Spain would protect his companies and workers and “continue to strive for the open world.”
Ireland Minister Simon Harris said he was ready to negotiate with the US, calling it a “best way”, while Taoisich Michal Martin stated that Trump’s decision was “deeply regret” and no one used “.
Outside the EU, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albonez said the Americans would pay the biggest price for what he called “unjustified tariffs”, but stated that his government would not bring mutual measures.
“We will not join the race to the bottom, which will increase prices and slow growth,” he added.
The largest economy of Latin America, Brazil, approved the law in Congress on Wednesday – the law on economic reciprocity – to combat the 10% tariff imposed by Trump. There was no immediate reaction of the president, but last week Louise Inazio Lula said Silva that his country “could not stand” before the tariffs.
Shortly after Trump’s proclamation, US Treasury Minister Scott Bavert did not “avenge” and “sit, accept it.
“Because if you avenge, there will be an escalation,” he said Fox News.
It is noticeable that the two largest trading partners of the United States, Canada and Mexico were not mentioned in the reports on Wednesday.
The White House said he would deal with both countries according to Previous executive orderswhich imposed 25% of tariffs on two countries as part of efforts to resolve Fentanyl and the border.
Although Canada will still be influenced by tariffs, said Prime Minister Mark Karni. Measures such as a 25% tariff by car starting at midnight on Thursday, “directly affecting millions of Canadians,” he added.
He promised to “fight these tariffs with counter -measures”, adding that the fees of the United States “fundamentally change the global trading system.”
