The 14th edition of the Big Bash League (BBL) is about to enter its most interesting phase with just three games left in the regular season. The Sydney derby between thunder i sixers ended without result due to rain. With this, three teams have locked their position in the qualifiers for the season.
Three teams that have reached the BBL playoffs.
So far, both the Thunder and Sixers have completed their regular season games. While the Sixers with 6 wins and 2 losses have collected 14 points on the board and finished second in the league table, the Thunder have made a solid comeback from a slow start to the season and have managed 5 wins to take 12 points on board to finish third.
However, Hobart Hurricanes they managed to finish the regular season at the top of the table with 7 wins and only 1 loss throughout the season. Interestingly, the Hurricanes still have a game to play against the Melbourne Stars, which proves to be the most important for the Stars as it will determine their chances of making the playoffs. Currently, these 3 teams have secured a spot in the playoffs.
The format of the final
The final series of the Big Bash league has a unique format different from other leagues around the world. The top two teams play each other to determine the first runner-up of the season, while the loser plays another game against the winner of the match between the third and fourth places. While the previous device has been called as the ‘Qualifier’the latter is known as the ‘Knockout’.
This year, the Hurricanes will play the Sixers for the Qualifier. The winner of the match goes directly to the final. While Sydney Thunder will play the fourth team to qualify for the season finale.

The situation of the points table
The BBL points table currently paints a partially clear picture of the finals scenario. While 3 teams have advanced to the next round, a fourth team is yet to be determined, which will play the Knockout against Sydney Thunder. The two most likely candidates for the final spot are Melbourne Stars i Brisbane Heat which are currently in 4th and 5th place respectively.
Both teams have a game to play. While the Stars will face off against the league leaders Hurricanes, the Heat will play their final game against the top seed. Melbourne Renegades. Both teams are well prepared side by side with 8 and 7 points respectively and the result of the last game of the regular season will determine which team will secure the final spot.
The Stars will have a clear shot at the top 4 only if they beat the Hurricanes. However, they will already have an idea of their chances as Renegades and Heat will play each other a day before their match. For the Heat, they will not only have to defeat the Renegades but also dominate the game and emerge as convincing match winners to put pressure on the Stars.
