“I’ve cried too many tears to count – the kind of tears that make you get in the shower with the absurd hope that the running water on your face will somehow make you stop feeling them, or pretend that they are not there,” Markle, 43, wrote via Instagram on Tuesday, January 7. “But they are. And that’s okay too.”
Markle recalled the moment in 2015 when she met her dog she would call Guy. He had been in a kill shelter in Kentucky and had a few days to live.
“I pulled it up … and fell in love,” she wrote. “They referred to him as ‘the little guy’ because he was so small and frail, so I named him ‘Guy’. And he was the best man any girl could have asked for.”
The Duchess of Sussex said Guy was by her side as she worked on it old blog, The Tigand filming scenes for Suits. He was also nearby for all his milestone celebrations with Prince Harry and their children Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3.
“When I got fiance(and then married), when I became a mother,” she shared. “He was with me for everything: the silence, the chaos, the silence, the comfort.”
As Markle shared many photos of Guy in her announcement, she confirmed that her dog would be making some appearances in her upcoming Netflix show titled With Love, Meghan.
According to Netflix’s official logline, the show “reimagines the genre of lifestyle programming” with Markle in the lead “mixing how-to and honest conversation with friends.” It will also offer a look at her life in California.
“Because many of you will now see Guy in this new series, I hope you will understand why I am so disappointed by his loss,” Markle explained. “I think you might fall a little in love too.”
In her personal tribute to Guy, Markle also took the time to recount a “terrible accident” her dog suffered before moving to the UK. For several months, Guy had to undergo operations and recover away from home.
“Doctors said he would never walk again, but Dr. Noel Fitzpatrick he said he could do it,” she wrote. “H and I would drive late at night, after hours, to see Guy as he recovered in Surrey for months on end. I will always be grateful to Noel and his team, the team at Queen’s Animal Hospital West in TO, our vets now, and my friends and community: Thank you for loving him so.”
In a final message to her followers, Markle asked pet lovers to consider adopting not shopping the next time they’re looking for a furry friend. She also continued to thank for all the happy memories she shared with Guy.
“Thank you for so many years of unconditional love, my sweet love,” she wrote. “You filled my life in ways you’ll never know ❤️🩹#adoptdontshop.”
